I urge you to attend a community open house and information session is being held April 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell St.

I submitted the following opinion to the Times Colonist:

The townhouse proposal at 960 Foul Bay Road, led by Jennifer Travelbea, raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored. This overambitious project, featuring 16 townhouses and 8 strata units, is out of character with the surrounding Oak Bay neighborhood and threatens to disrupt its peaceful, heritage-driven environment.

The scale of the development—buildings up to 40 feet tall—does not align with Oak Bay’s low-density character, and the loss of several Garry oak trees is an unacceptable environmental cost. The increase in traffic and strain on local infrastructure will overwhelm streets, schools, and public services. Brighton Avenue, a designated greenway, will bear the brunt of increased vehicle congestion, compromising both safety and the integrity of this community space.

Despite claims that this project will provide “attainable housing,” it is more likely to cater to higher-income residents, exacerbating the affordability crisis rather than alleviating it. This is a development driven by financial interests, not by a genuine desire to address the housing needs of Oak Bay’s residents.

Oak Bay deserves thoughtful, sustainable growth that respects its heritage, environment, and community character. Developers must engage with the community to create solutions that truly address the needs of all residents, not just those looking to profit from an overly dense development.

I urge Oak Bay Council to reject this proposal and demand a more considerate approach to housing.
