From our neighbours at Brighton Greenway.

Scott and Jennifer Travelbea submitted plans to Oak Bay to cut down 26 bylaw-protected trees at their 960 Foul Bay Road development project. The plan includes cutting down 3 trees on neighbours' property and 5 on public land.

"Based on review of the plans and our understanding of the project scope, twenty-six (26) on-site bylaw-protected trees are likely to require removal due to impacts from the proposed construction, along with three (3) off-site protected trees and five (5) municipal trees," according to the Travelbea's Jan. 2, 2025 Impact Assessment and Tree Management Plan submitted to Oak Bay. Read the full article in the Capital Daily here.

If the private landowners and the public don't give the Travelbeas permission to cut down their trees, their plan says the trees will die anyway due to encroachment from their development.

After the Save Brighton Greenway Group contacted Oak Bay Mayor and Council, the Travelbeas then claimed their plan contained some "inaccuracies." The Travelbeas are claiming they are walking back their plan only after the community challenged them on the public and private property destruction. This admission only raises more questions. The Save Brighton Greenway Neighbourhood Group is pro-development on this site and in this community, but we support thoughtful and lawful development that has community stewardship in mind.

We have yet to see an amended Impact Assessment and Tree Management Plan that doesn't destroy public and private property.

We support a Heritage Revitalization Agreement for the historic Samuel Maclure House -- as many in this community do. It's a beautiful home that the Travelbeas have neglected for more than a decade. An HRA designation should not give them carte blanche to violate the OCP, zoning bylaws -- and destroy trees on neighbours' property and municipal public land.

Scott and Jennifer Travelbea are exploiting this community to see how much they can get away with.

Please make your voice heard about the Travelbea's aggressive and egregious actions. Please contact Oak Bay Mayor and Councillors here
